On the weekend of the 28/29th April the Cornwall Team travelled to Bath to compete at Excalibur 2012. With many of our more experienced fencers abroad on international duties we fielded a very young ‘development’ team supplemented by a few old TFC friends who had rallied to the call and travelled to join us. Having won the title for the last two years we were very much the team to beat. However having many members of the team who were fencing at Excalibur for the first time I was not expecting the impressive result that was achieved by beating every county with the exception of our old rivals Somerset. At the end of the competition after two days hard battle we were tied with Somerset on 22 points each. As they had beaten us as a county the honour of the Excalibur title was theirs with Cornwall placed a magnificent second.
Many congratulations to the first placed weapon teams, Men’s Sabre and Women’s Sabre, and the three first placed individuals, Katrina Smith (WE), Jake Rowley (MS) and Keira Sleeman (WS) who at 14, I believe is the youngest fencer ever to win the title.
Many thanks to Paul Caine for his superb management skills, and JR Rowe as our irreplaceable armourer. JR is the only member of the Cornwall team who has been to every Excalibur since we started competing in 1999.
Every member of the team is to be congratulated on a fantastic performance. Your behavior, fighting spirit and maturity was without equal. You achieved an extraordinary result.
